Family Wellness Chiropractor Dandenong East
As family wellness practitioners, chiropractors are acutely aware of the importance of regular chiropractic care for both children and adults. As a profession chiropractors have been promoting Wellness care for many years.
All chiropractors support a ‘best-evidence’ approach to practice. Evidence based practice is the careful use of current best evidence in making decisions about the care of individual patients, both adults and children.
A research study published in 1997 investigated the effects of chiropractic care on self-related health, wellness and quality of life. This is the largest study of its kind ever undertaken regarding a chiropractic population. The results of the study reflected very well on regular or ‘Wellness’ chiropractic care. After surveying 2,818 people in 156 practices, a strong connection was found between people receiving chiropractic care and improvements in health, wellness and quality of life. Of the people surveyed 99% wished to continue care and 95% of those patients who responded reported that their expectations had been met.
In another study published in 1996 the general health of people under chiropractic care was compared with the health of people who were not under chiropractic care. The study consisted of seniors over 75 years of age. Again the results were very favourable for chiropractic. It was reported that the seniors under chiropractic care reported better overall health, used fewer prescription drugs, spent fewer days in hospitals and nursing homes and were more active than those not under chiropractic care.
In 2000 researchers surveyed 311 chiropractic patients, aged 65 years and older, who had been under chiropractic care for five years or more. The results of the study demonstrated that these patients when compared with people of the same age, spent only 31% of the national average for health care services. In addition to this there was a 50% reduction in medical provider visits. The health habits of patients receiving regular chiropractic care were better overall than the general population, including decreased use of nonprescription drugs. Furthermore, 95.8% believed the care to be either “considerably” or “extremely” valuable.
There was a very interesting study performed which involved two hundred paediatricians and two hundred chiropractors who were randomly selected.
Each participant was sent a survey to determine whether there were any differences in the health status of their respective children. In essence the study was comparing the health of children raised under two different health care models. On the one hand the medical model of health and on the other hand the chiropractic model of health. The results of the study demonstrated nearly 43% of the medical children had suffered from tonsillitis, compared to less than 27% of the chiropractic children. There was also notably lower antibiotic use and lower incidence of disease, especially ear infections reported in the chiropractic children.
Another study was undertaken to determine if a relationship existed between the incidence of childhood diseases and the frequency of chiropractic care. The results suggest that intensive chiropractic care, defined as more than seven visits per year and for more than one year, increased resistance to the common childhood diseases.
So is Wellness Chiropractic care something that many people participate in?
A researcher in 2000 reported that 79% of chiropractic patients have wellness care recommended to them by their chiropractor, and nearly half of those comply.
In another survey of 3018 people, the following question was asked…
“Although you feel healthy, would you follow your family member’s lead and visit a doctor who focuses on wellness and prevention just so you can stay feeling that way?”
The researcher found that 62% responded with a ‘yes’.
Clearly, there is a growing body of evidence that wellness care provided by doctors of chiropractic may reduce health care costs, improve health behaviors, and improve patient perceived quality of life.
